Welcome to Official-Typing-Test.com's Free Online Typing Tutor. In 12 lessons you will learn to use the correct finger for every key on an American keyboard. The first lesson in touch typing is to learn the keys in the 'home row.' If you have not read our article, "Learn Touch Typing", we recommend that you do that now. The article will open in a new window.

How to use this typing tutor
Type the letter that is highlighted in blue. This symbol ( ↵ ) means that it is time to press enter and start a new line. At the bottom of each page there will be a reset button so you may practice the lessons as many times as you like.
Start from the beginning, even if it seems too easy. If you are making a lot of errors, try the lesson again or go back to the previous one. We will be covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time, so don't be afraid to try each lesson more than once. Typing is a skill that takes time to master, so be patient and keep practicing.
Don't look at the keyboard while you are typing. Each lesson has a picture below the lesson for reference.
Focus on your accuracy first. Speed will come with practice.
Always use the same finger for each key.
If using the correct finger doesn't feel right, don't force yourself to be uncomfortable. I personally type the number 6 with the "wrong" finger. Just make sure that you use the same finger every time.
Try to look ahead to the next letter and move your finger to the key. This will take some practice, but keep it in your mind while you are learning. Common words like "the", "and", "one", etc. can be typed in one motion almost as fast as you can type a single letter.
Use the backspace key.
Many typing sites will tell you that using backspace slows you down. In a WPM test you may decide to just blow through not worry about errors, but when you are typing in real life you will probably need the backspace key a lot. It should be practiced just like every other key.
Learn how to practice correctly
Remember what keys / combinations give you trouble, and spend extra time on your weak areas.
Find out what you do well, and try to do it even faster.
Use these skills every time you are at your computer. Even if you are just typing one word into a search engine, put your fingers on the home row and use proper technique.
You don't have to finish all of these lessons in one day, bookmark this page and come back as often as you like. When you finish our typing tutor, be sure to try our free typing tests.
